Preface

Materials Science, the substantial basis and pioneering power in the development of modern industry, provides strong technical functions to support national economy and industrial development. Since China stepped into the period of reform and opening to the outside world, the research, development and industrialization of advanced materials have been very importance to Chinese government. In the past 10 years, the government has invested over RMB 3000 million to finance a series of projects, including the construction of state key laboratories, national project research centers and important scientific projects; has organized and undertaken hundreds of hi-tech industrializing projects for advanced materials, which have promoted investment 10 times greater and made great breakthroughs in many areas of research and development; and has made a continuous new record of improvements, increasing the scale and expanding application yielding an industry value of over 550 trillion RMB.

On March 29, 2007, 07 Bo’ao International Advanced Materials Forum, the grand two-day event of the China petrochemical industry, was successfully concluded at Sofitel Bo’ao Hotel in Hainan, the permanent venue of Bo'ao Asia Forum.

The forum is strongly supported by government ministries and industry organizations such as the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association. Top leaders from world’s most advanced materials companies gathered in the event. They are managers from five top-ranked Chinese petrochemical corporations—China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec), China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), ChemChina and Sinochem; presidents from top multinational companies, such as DOW, BASF, Bayer, Toray; decision makers from excellent domestic advanced materials enterprises, such as Zhejiang Juhua Group, Guangzhou Kingfa Science & Technology Corporation, Ningbo Dacheng Advanced Material Corporation; pioneering academicians from science and technology institutions, such as Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhonghao Chenguang Research Institute of Chemical Industry, China Aviation Materials Supplies Institute; and financiers and investors from financial and investment industry, such as China International Fund Management Corporation, and China Construction Bank.

In order to strengthen and continue this valuable high level forum, the Tianjin Municipal People’s Government, ChemChina, the Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (DECHEMA e.V.) and Morgan Stanley, representing the shared interests of government, enterprises, industry organizations and investors, agree to continue jointly organizing The 2nd International Advanced Materials (Tianjin) Summit. With the theme of “Opportunity & Responsibility,” the summit will be held from October 30 to November 1 of 2008 inTianjin.

The summit is assumed to deepen communications between government and enterprises so that enterprises can learn of policy trends and the voices of the enterprises can be heard by government. Domestic and foreign companies will share accounts of their challenges and achievements so as to strengthen mutual learning and extend full cooperation.

Subject

Opportunity & Responsibility

?Opportunity in China
As the world’s manufacturing center shifts to the Asia-Pacific region, China welcomes an increasing number of manufacturing bases and world R&D centers of well known companies. China is enjoying the opportunity for sustaining sound long-term economic development.

?Opportunity in Advanced Materials Industry
With the improved standard of living and the promotion of national key projects, needs for great quantities of high quality advanced materials have intensified. The advanced materials industry realistically expects unprecedented new development.

?Opportunity in Tianjin
As one of the only two designated key development districts in the national development blueprint, Tianjin Binhai New Area is programmed as the third economic development pole along with Shenzhen and Pudong in China. It is to become the key point to radiate its influence into North China, Northeast China, and Northwest China, helping to coordinate economic development between South and North China. As an advanced modern manufacturing base hosting manufacturing companies like AIRBUS, TOYOTA, Motorola, P&G, Samsung, Tianjin Binhai New Area is to be turned into 30 million tons petrochemical industry base. Therefore in Tianjin, the advanced materials industry, as a link connecting other industries, has huge development opportunities.

?Industry Responsibility
What contributions to the advanced materials industry have been made by enterprises in technological innovation, application, research and development?

?Social Responsibility
Contributions and consideration are to be repaid to society by enterprises. What kind of concepts do the firms have about environmental protection, saving energy and reducing harmful emissions? What have they already put into practice? What kind of experiences or achievements are worthy of sharing, consider and learning?
